| LOOKING FOR YOGA SPACE | |
After nearly a year at our wonderful yoga center above the
Island Hammock Animal Hospital, KTP Yoga Program is seeking a new home. Dr. Martha Edwards and John Kocol, our Center benefactors,
are expanding their animal care space and so we are currently looking for another place to hold regular classes. We appreciate
their support of the program and wish them continued success. We are open to exploring options -- from a donated, full-time Center to space we can
use on a regular basis. Indoors works best -- big windows or outside access are bonuses! We need your help, energy, ideas and
sparks....please send leads, with any background info or contact people you have, to www.keystopeace.com We have already looked
into Key Largo Park, Mangrove Marina, and a dance studio in Key Largo. Let's all put our energy into co-creating a new community
yoga center. In the meantime, our teachers are available for private lessons. Some are also teaching at local yoga studios -- Paradise
Yoga across from Founder's Park and Froggy's Gym in Tavernier. KPJ also offers yoga further south in Islamorada. We
suggest you check with these businesses for exact times, fees and location. Let's see what we manifest in 2012 for KTP Yoga ! In Peace, Marilyn Rogers (KTP secretary and yoga coordinator) |
"THE LONG WALK HOME"
News
and Update from Ron Zaleski's
journal and mission | |
On Wednesday Nov. 23rd I got an email from Laine Evans, Congressman Philip Roe's aid
asking if I could come to DC on November 30th to the VA Health Sub Committee. By the time I got the email and called I was
unable to reach their office, it was closed for Thanks Giving till Monday Nov. 28th. When I got in touch on Monday she asked
if I could make it and told me the meeting was on Friday Dec. 2nd? I said, yes. Over
the Thanks Giving weekend I got in touch with a retired pilot, Ron Cole who got me a Buddy Pass to fly there. I also got in
touch with Russell Morris who had emailed me a year ago from DC saying he supported what we were doing and asked if I could
stay with him while I was in DC, he said, yes. I called Paul Sullivan with Veterans for Common Sense telling him I was to
go before the Committee and asked what I should do to make the biggest impact as I only have one chance. He told me to go
a day before the meeting to introduce myself to everyone on the committee and submit a letter to each of them stating what
we want, why we want it, why I did it and a list of questions to ask themselves about the topic, Flying in Wednesday night I was met by Russell who took me into
his home, fed me and the following day helped me get to the capitol to see the committee members. I spent the day going to
all of their offices meeting their aides and handing out our letter. Before the day was done I did get a few condescending
looks from some of the staff, maybe because of the absence of shoes? Some were very receptive because they had family in the
military. The last person I went to visit wasn't on the committee, but had got
in touch with me when I was walking across the country. I stopped in at Congresswoman Grace Napalitano's office and saw
her aide Anne who was my contact. She was so happy to see me I thought I was a long lost relative. She said, I wished I had
known, my boss would really like to meet you, are you available later I will call her and see what we can do. I said, yes.
I got a call later asking if I could come by the office at 5pm to meet, I said, yes. When I got there at 5pm Anne told me
we were going to meet her down on the house floor. When we got there and told the guards what we were doing they let me go
to the entrance where Grace came out, she couldn't thank me enough, then introduced me to about 20 Congressmen and women.
I was somewhat overwhelmed. The following day at 9am I was at Congressman Philip
Roe's office where he wished me luck and said he would see me at the meeting as he had other meetings to go to. His aid
told me I wouldn't be allowed to speak, but would be recognized, I was a little disappointed, but figured God had a plan,
which so far has been better then the ones I come up with. Some times I think I could hear him say, What were you thinking?
I sat in the front row while the sign I carried across the country was displayed in the back. The chair person Anne Berkele
from NY said that Phil Roe asked if he could introduce a special guest, one of his constituents. Phil said, I would like to
recognize Ron Zaleski who isn't my constituent, I met him as he walked across the country to raise awareness for Vets
and he has legislation with him. When he was done Congressman Reyes from Texas who I met yesterday on the house floor with
Grace Napalitano said, I would also like to recognize Ron Zaleski, I have read his legislation and think we should act upon
it. I sat through a few hours of experts with degrees talking about Veterans and
when it was over I gave each of them a copy of the petition, had an interview from the paper. The speaker of the committee
came to me and said, I was sorry I didn't have you speak, I didn't have enough notice, what can I do for you, my brother
was a Marine. I said, we can't wait for the Government, it's up to us to reach out to the individuals not looking
at the effect, but the cause. Ask that young man or woman to go for a walk and talk with you. You don't talk, you listen
to them. They aren't different from us,we are all the same just having different experiences, Before I left DC I was told by Ane that Congresswoman Grace Napalitano and Congressman Reyes are working on turning
the petition into legislation plus 2 additional points that were in the letter we submitted to the committee. The petition
can be found on our website and the 2 additional points are an anonymous PTS support group available for active military personnel
and that the family of those coming home are involved in the counseling, for who they sent over isn't who is coming home.

Youth
Challenge Day Returns! BE THE CHANGE of the Florida Keys Announcement | Our vision is a community where each child in Monroe County has the resources, skills and motivation
to survive and thrive in school and in life.
For Immediate ReleaseContact: Michele Sutter (305) 852-1664 December 31, 2011 Be the Change youth plan return of signature program on
MLK Day High school youth who have been a part of Be the Change of the Florida Keys (BTC) have
been asking for the return of Challenge Day, the organization's signature program for more than two years. In January
of 2012 they will get their wish. Alex Castillo, Senior at Coral Shores High School attended Challenge Day as a freshman and
ever since has been an enthusiastic advocate to bring the event back. "Challenge Day is important to me because it brings
people together, promotes respect and teaches us about caring for one another and the importance of service." The first Challenge Day is scheduled to take place on the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. in honor and celebration
of a man who advocated for unity, equality and social justice, all components of the Challenge Day experience. Members of
the BTC PeaceJam Youth Board are instrumental in the youth momentum behind planning and implementing the one day workshop
as well as all the follow up activities, projects, and events planned in the coming months. Each member of the youth board
will attend an event at their school and most will serve as peer facilitators or "Red Shirts" because of the red
shirts they wear during the event. Keys To Peace has donated $1000 to Be The Change to help bring Challenge
Day to our high schools. Denise Downing, KTP member says of the day, "We encourage our members to 'Be the Change
You Want to See In The World' and volunteer one day of your time to the event. It's an inspiring day for everyone!" |
| A
New Year to Practice Loving-Kindness |
~David F. Coppola, Holistic Doctor, DC (KTP President) www.drdavidcoppola.com 305-451-1819 Pink Plaza, Suite 241, MM 103, B/S A New Year to Practice Loving-Kindness; It takes
Mindfulness Mindfulness
is imperative to acting out of love and kindness. Mindfulness means to be attentive, aware and thoughtful. It is a necessary
basis for developing the characteristic trait of loving kindness. These two actions: being mindful, and being kind, are important
for creating a world which perpetuates peace and happiness. Each of us is born with a great capacity for loving kindness. Only with a calm
mind though, which is free from anger, greed, and jealousy, can the seeds of loving kindness grow. This year let's nurture
the seeds of loving kindness in ourselves. Help them take root, and facilitate its maturity by practicing awareness. Let's
all live in togetherness with a common interest in being kind and mindful in the new year ahead. By doing this, we will sustain
and bolster the force that holds this universe together...and that is - compassion! Looking for the good in everything will open the doors to the wondrous potential of transforming negative into positive
and keep you healthy and grounded. Herein lays the basis for developing habits which will stabilize you emotionally and help
you develop genuine happiness. Start tomorrow morning by waking up with smile on your face. Begin your day with happy thoughts. By all means, do not
hold grudges into the next day or wake up angry or act mean because you might not have slept well. This will only drain you
more and transcend you into the depths of depression. Not to mention drag everyone else around you down. Everyone can imagine something happy. That
doesn't mean you have to force a thought of incredible happiness, just formulate a happier thought. It doesn't have
to be the happiest thing in the world, just something leading you to inner peace and joy. It can be simple as, "I am
happy to be alive!" The realm of forgiveness becomes a sanctuary for knowing love. Forgive yourself first for resisting change. Allow healing
vibrations of infinite love and gratitude to perpetuate from acts of forgiveness, hope, accepting, releasing and moving on.
Do your best not to rationalize selfishness or even worse, blame others for your ill-feelings. If this is a habit of yours,
take full responsibility for yourself and stop it now. By blaming others you take away your ability to accept people for who they are. It hinders your ability
to practice loving kindness and achieve the sublime state of equanimity or what is known
as "peace of mind." Try using this mantra... "I am peace, and peace is in me." Now
is the time to make a shift in your thought processes. Choose to be mindful. Choose to be kind and have a healthy and Happy
New Year! Infinite
Love & Gratitude! ~David F. Coppola, Holistic Doctor, DC (KTP President) www.drdavidcoppola.com 305-451-1819 Pink Plaza, Suite 241, MM 103,

The Island Marketplace -mile marker 101 bay
side-is one of the first Keys to Peace permanent public placements. With our booth there, we have the opportunity
to become a real hub for peace and community outreach. Already we are the location for the food drop-off spot for a local
church food bank, and we're making arrangements to work with local womens shelters in the area to provide assistance.
The opportunities are endless --- we're just getting started.. The booth is located just about in the center of the space when you come in the
door. Items are displayed, and free information is on the tables when no one is at the booth, but when it's manned there
are t-shirts, Rubik's cubes, cups, books, necklaces, and tons of other neat things to set up and sell. And we have a large
lending library at the booth that is there all the time. The Market's hours are Friday through Sunday, 9
AM - 5 PM and volunteers are needed for 2 or 3 hour shifts. Contact Marlene at 850-291-6896 madcat@bellsouth.net if you want to help. |

MANY THANKS to Dr. Martha Edwards & John Kocol | |
Going with the flow...The Keys To Peace yoga program is changing after nearly a year in our wonderful
Keys To Peace & Yoga Center at Island Hammock Pet Hospital.
Keys To Peace would like to thank Dr. Martha Edwards
and John Kocol for allowing us to use their facility for yoga & other movement classes these past 11 months. Their veterinary
practice is expanding and they need the upstairs space -- so it is no longer available to us. We would also like to congratulate
them on their success, wishing them prosperity.
We know that change is inevitable and we're moving forward
to see what is next for the Yoga Program. We're exploring finding both a new space and a new yoga coordinator so we can
continue this service to the community! If you know of a location to suit our needs or a lead on a possible coordinator, please
reply to this email. We are looking for the least overhead possible, and would greatly appreciate a donated space.
The closing date is after Glenda's class on Thurs Dec. 1, 2011. For those of you who have been holding free yoga coupons
from membership renewals or new members, they will no longer be redeemable. |

GENERATES GOOD WILL The next time you go out in the world, you might try this practice: directing your attention
to people-in their cars, on the sidewalk, talking on their cell phones-just wish for them all to be happy and well. Without
knowing anything about them, they can become very real, by regarding each of them personally and rejoicing in the comforts
and pleasures that come their way. Each of us has this soft spot: a capacity for love and tenderness. But if we don't
encourage it, we can get pretty stubborn about remaining sour. | ~by Pema Chodron

group stands in front of the "Unconquered" statue at FSU with Osceola and horse Renegade as the group celebrates
their success at FSU. Front Row left to right Catherine Guinovart, Olivia Manz, Angelica Olivera, Michele Sutter, Katrina
Wiatt, Katie Fernandez, Xavier McKnight and Jaclyn Signorelli. Back row left to right Alexander Morato, Natalie Sassine, Cassidy
Burgos, Jessica Smith, Leah Sutter and Martha Meroni. Keys to Peace Supports BTC Youth Travel to FSU to Present workshops at SLAM! The Southeast PeaceJam Affiliate and Center for Leadership and Civic
Education invited Be the Change youth to attend their annual SLAM event on the campus of Florida State University to present
workshops to youth and service learning practitioners from around the state. The BTC Guernica mural was showcased at the event
with a dramatic presentation. The theme of this year's event is water conservation and four rainbarrel and container garden
workshops were presented by BTC youth. According to the PeaceJam Southeast Affiliate Director, Rody Thompson, several groups
from around the state plan to implement these projects in their respective areas. BTC youth also attended other workshops
and training to support their work in the Keys. "To lead workshops and share best practices in a college setting
is a unique leadership opportunity for our youth. Our students' projects can now be duplicated by students from around
the state - which is an exciting prospect," said Michele Sutter, Program Manager for BTC "Which was made possible
in part by the generous support from Keys to Peace." This was the reason why Keys to Peace, Inc. (KTP)
supported the project. Denise Downing, a founder of KTP said of the trip, "We have been impressed with what we have read
recently about our local BTC PeaceJam group and see this as an opportunity for us to help cultivate peacemakers in our youth
community. BTC, through its partnership with PeaceJam aligns with the goals of KTP by their work to create a more peaceable
and compassionate community." BTC has partnered with PeaceJam, a global youth movement since 2008.

| Christmas
2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition | As the holidays approach, the giant
Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has
been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse. It is time to think outside the Box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in produced wrapping paper?
Everyone--
yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership or private
yoga class? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking
about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, detail shops and hand car washers would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers? Perhaps that grateful
gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, new palm tree or landscaping done for a season. There are a gazillion local
restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your
intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half
dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.
Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your local Keys Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.
How many people couldn't use an oil change
for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a local shop?
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.
Many computers could use a tune-up, and I KNOW
I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.
OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people are in abundance. They make jewelry,
pottery, and paintings.
Plan
your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and
leave your server a nice tip.
And,
how about going out to see a play at your hometown theatre.
Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly
people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light,
about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the
mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. Reward yourself and hire a local contractor to
remodel your kitchen, bath or home. Christmas is now about caring about US (We the People), encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we could not imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition!!
Please pass this around because we can make a difference can't we? |
Island Marketplace Booth |

A Writers Cottage
| |
A Writer's Cottage VIII - Peace Bell By Debra
Young at www.hopes-dreams-journey.b logspot.com "Every time you hear a bell ring, it means that some angel's
just got his wings." Frances Goodrich A peace bell, suspended from a sturdy branch
of a live oak tree would add to the tranquility at my Writer's Cottage. Clear, rotund bell sounds, resonating through
the skies and across the waters would blanket the community with a shroud of peacefulness for moments in time. The large oak tree with its meandering branches
that form a willowy canopy would permit golden beams of light to shine through and illuminate the peace bell. A meditation
bench made from Florida coquina placed underneath the canopy would also catch the sun's rays and provide a spot for me
to sit and listen to the sounds of silence. I would ring the peace bell before I begin my daily ritual of molding thoughts and ideas into written
passages. As the bell's clapper hits the metal, I would look to the sky for the angel who just received wings, say a prayer
of gratitude for the bounty and beauty of language, and pray that my words flow freely and provide inspiration. "Let there be peace on earth...and
let it begin with me," is the mantra for my Writer's Cottage. __________________ Note: I learned about Sounds of Peace Bells from my husband's scuba diving
partner, Denise, on our recent trip to Key Largo. Denise belongs to a grassroots non-profit organization, Keys to Peace. Peace
bells were created from recycled scuba tanks and feature original works of art donated by Keys' artists. During a visit
to the Keys, Tibetan Buddhist monks blessed the bells. To find out more about this organization and their "Sounds of
Peace" bells, go to www.keystopeace.com.

Wednes 6:30 PM Hatha - Glenda Smith Tues
& Thurs 9:00 AM Hatha Flow is a series of slow, flowing movements (asanas), designed to create
balance, to open our hearts to gratefulness, love, inner peace, and to create a sense of calmness and gentleness within us.
Vinyasa Flow - Kathy Shirley Satur
11:00 AM The word Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized movement." In
this dynamic class the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next using your breath to initiate each movement. Vinyasa Flow & Alignment - Sherry Ward All levels are invited
to this class that can best be described as a vinyasa flow with a focus on alignment. This fun and challenging class is designed
to encourage everyone to feel calm and confident within and know that anything is possible when your mind is still, your spirit
feels harmonious and your soul is enlightened. Sherry completed her teacher training in November 2009 with Fred Bush at the
Miami Yogashala, is certified in Power Yoga and a member of the Yoga Alliance. Gentle - Shevaun Young
Wednes 9:00 AM (ck sched) Shevaun's teaching style is eclectic and from the heart....Gentle
yoga poses are created with the presence and awareness of the breath....Poses are modified for each person's body so that
we come from a place of peace and honor with our bodies.....Aromatherapy and tibetan bowls or chimes are integrated into the
class....Come and experience the freedom of the mind, body and heart...Namaste
Iyengar - Leslie Sharman Tues 6:30 PM (ck sched) Based on the teachings of the yogi
B.K.S Iyengar, this style is most concerned with bodily alignment. In yoga, the word alignment is used to describe the precise
way in which your body should be positioned in each pose in order to obtain the maximum benefits and avoid injury. Iyengar
practice usually emphasizes holding poses over long periods versus moving quickly from one pose to the next (flow). Iyengar
practice makes use of props, such as yoga blankets, blocks and straps, to help with alignment.

Contact Marlene at 850-291-6896 madcat@bellsouth.net if you want to help. |

was speaking about Keys to Peace bringing peace into our world.

"The one
hope for the future lies, I believe, in Sacred Activism - the fusion of the deepest spiritual knowledge and passion with clear, wise, radical action in all the arenas of the world, inner and outer.
We have very little time in which to awaken and transform ourselves, to be able to preserve the planet,
and to heal the divisions between the powerful and the powerless.
Let us go
forward now with firm resolve and profound dedication." ~Andrew Harvey

Yoga Styles
Hatha
- Glenda Smith Tues AM & Thurs AM Hatha Flow is a series of slow, flowing movements
(asanas), designed to create balance, to open our hearts to gratefulness, love, inner peace, and to create a sense of calmness
and gentleness within us.
Vinyasa Flow -
Kathy Shirley Sunday AM The word Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized
movement." In this dynamic class the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next using your
breath to initiate each movement. Vinyasa Flow &
Alignment - Sherry Ward All levels are invited to this class that can best be described as a vinyasa
flow with a focus on alignment. This fun and challenging class is designed to encourage everyone to feel calm and confident
within and know that anything is possible when your mind is still, your spirit feels harmonious and your soul is enlightened.
Sherry completed her teacher training in November 2009 with Fred Bush at the Miami Yogashala, is certified in Power
Yoga and a member of the Yoga Alliance.
Gentle - Shevaun Young
Friday AM Shevaun's teaching style is eclectic and from the heart....Gentle
yoga poses are created with the presence and awareness of the breath....Poses are modified for each person's body so that
we come from a place of peace and honor with our bodies.....Aromatherapy and tibetan bowls or chimes are integrated into the
class....Come and experience the freedom of the mind, body and heart...Namaste
Iyengar - Leslie Sharman Beginners Mon AM & Weds. PM Based on the teachings
of the yogi B.K.S Iyengar, this style is most concerned with bodily alignment. In yoga, the word alignment is used to describe
the precise way in which your body should be positioned in each pose in order to obtain the maximum benefits and avoid injury.
Iyengar practice usually emphasizes holding poses over long periods versus moving quickly from one pose to the next (flow).
Iyengar practice makes use of props, such as yoga blankets, blocks and straps, to help with alignment.
